Chapter Fourteen

‘Please, please not this morning.’ Molly had spent the last thirty minutes retching over the toilet. She wanted to cry and really couldn’t take much more. She’d been woken by the dawn chorus and as soon as her eyes were open the morning sickness had engulfed her. Every time she crawled back to bed, she found herself back cradling the toilet within no time at all.

‘This is no fun,’ she murmured to Darling, who followed her into the bathroom every time Molly moved. ‘Why do women put themselves through this time and time again?’ She wiped her face with a cold, wet cloth then curled back up under her duvet. First hot, then cold, she just couldn’t get comfortable. She attempted to go back to sleep but baby McKendrick was just not letting her – the nausea still felt as bad when she closed her eyes. Trying to curb the sickness she reached for the packet of ginger biscuits and began to nibble one. She didn’t even feel like a cup of tea.

At least she had a few hours before she was due at the green, followed by morning surgery. ‘I want to cry, Darling. How do I get rid of this feeling?’

Molly didn’t know how she was going to get through the day if this carried on. She tried sitting up in bed, then lying on her side curled up in a ball, but frankly nothing was working. Finally, she wandered downstairs and looked at the contents of her fridge, but there was just nothing she fancied. Pouring herself a glass of juice because she knew she needed to stay hydrated, she took tiny sips. She was sure she’d read somewhere that sniffing lemons could help reduce sickness and she was willing to give anything a go. She made a mental note to grab some as she passed Hamish’s shop on the way to the green. ‘I even smell like sick,’ Molly said, sniffing her hair. She wrinkled her nose before climbing back up the stairs to take a shower.

As she let the water cascade over her Molly only had one thing on her mind: today was the day she was going to tell Cam. She couldn’t put it off any longer, especially if he decided he wanted to come along to the first scan. So the question playing on her mind was: how exactly do you drop it into the conversation, and should she tell him on the first car journey or the second?

‘Hey, remember the night we spent together? Guess what, I’m pregnant.’ Molly was rehearsing the conversation in her mind and it didn’t matter how she said it, it really didn’t sound good.

‘Ever thought of having a child? Well, guess what…’

Molly stepped out of the shower and took a deep breath. She had no clue what she was going to say so there was no point worrying about it now. She would just have to decide on the spot when the time was right.

After she’d dried herself and pulled a brush through her hair, she looked at her stomach in the mirror.
